A Mother's Voice on Grandmas

A Mother’s Voice on Grandmas

When Grandma was at our cousins they took her out to play.

Jumping rope soon became the activity of the day.

They tried Grandma out on all of the riddles and songs that they could sing.

And when she passed that test, they tried another thing.

Red Hot Peppers …The rope moved as fast as they could swing

That’s when Grandma became known as the Red Hot Pepper Queen.

When Grandma came to visit it was the time to show

every new idea or trick that we had come to know.

And so I worked and struggled to stand upon my head.

When I couldn’t do it quite; she stood on hers instead.

Now as I am growing older and carry the name, “Grandma”

I’ve followed her example and will be known as the grandma who does Zumba.

When grandma set the table ‘cause it was time to eat,

The table seemed to sag a bit when the food was placed there nice and neat.

Grandma was an amazing cook, but the best was her homemade bread.

When someone asked for her recipe she said she stored it in her head.

It was a dab of this, a pinch of that, and a handful of flour; how many can’t be known by sight.

The flour must be added and the dough kneaded until it feels just right.

I wanted to be like Grandma, and learn to cook and bake;

And so I began practicing by making a chocolate cake.

I tried my hand at soups and treats, and finally mastered bread;

And now when someone asks for the recipe, I answer, it’s written in my head.

Sometimes grandmas look different--- like a dried apple hanging from a tree;

But if you get to know her you’ll find she remembers being as young as you and me.

And you might be surprised at all the treasures she has hidden in her past.

Don’t wait too long to find them.  No one knows how long her time here will last.
